On Self-Mastery

Hey legend,

How has the first week of 2024 been for you?

I hope you've stepped into this new season feeling inspired, grateful and open to what's in store for you.

Maddy and I continued an annual tradition of bringing in the new year far away from home, in a quiet and serene booked getaway.

We spent our days reading, reflecting, walking, writing...

And embracing stillness.

Times like this (i.e. New Year) are when I'm tempted to go 0 to 💯 with "New Year, New Me" energy, but that's when I remind myself that:

"Slow is smooth.

And smooth is fast"

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

🔥 Burning Away 2023 (Literally)

Before we both add new goals to our plate, we make it a priority to identify and (literally) burn away the aspects of ourselves that no longer serve the version of ourselves that we're becoming.

We write succinct statements on sheets of paper about the beliefs, behaviours or identities we're letting go of.

We then read aloud each statement and let the candle's flame take it away.

Call it "woo" but it genuinely feels pretty liberating, and I always seem to feel "lighter" in my body after doing it.

Ready for Development

In the days following this ritual, I was reading American author Robert Greene's book, 'Mastery' which dissects the lives of history's greats.

A quote that struck me was:

"We are entering a world in which we can rely less and less upon the state, the corporation, or family or friends to help and protect us.

It is a globalized, harshly competitive environment.

We must learn to develop ourselves"

Robert Greene
Author of Mastery

I felt that it was the timely message we needed to hear, just as we were starting to map out our 2024 goals.

You can't master your goals...

Until you master yourself.

And being honest with ourselves, we both acknowledged that we'd both dropped the ball on a lot of key everyday habits over the last few months.

So we decided to bring things back to basics.

Committing To Self-Mastery Habits

Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.

No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity

- James Clear

In the spirit of building sustainable habits across the key areas of our lives, we brainstormed and coined what we call the "Self-Mastery Sprint".

Here's what we decided upon:

  • Step 1: Select 1 Self-Mastery Habit Across Each Area:
    • Your Health;
    • Your Wealth; and
    • Your Relationships
  • Step 2: Share Your Why & Declare Your New Identity
  • Step 3: Schedule Your Habits Into Your Calendar
  • Step 4: Track Your Habits For 1 Month.

So being the #NotionNerd that I am, I created a Notion template for us that could organise our habits, remain visible and accountable to each other and most importantly, gamify the process with a visual tracker.

And then it dawned on us.

Why not do this alongside others?

So, are you ready to join us?

We're opening the invitation to you to join us.

(For free!)

Because we want to win...together.

And research shows it.

Social accountability makes you x6.5 times more likely to complete a goal when you declare & share it with others

- ASTD, 2015.

If you want to build sustainable habits across the key areas of your life, then we'd love to have you join in our first-ever Self-Mastery Sprint.

We're kicking off on Monday 15th of January so register your free spot by giving that big yellow button a cheeky little tickle 👇🏽

Count down to 2024-01-14T14:00:00.000Z

Let's win together,

🕺🏽 Mamba
